About

Schwa: an unstressed central vowel (as in a mom e nt a go), represented by the symbol ə in the International Phonetic Alphabet. The most common vowel sound in English, and the one that nobody seems to know about. A trio of musicians and writers from West Yorkshire - we are Schwa.

Peter writes, Richard plays, Jacqui sings: we share the desire to meet and engage with people, to share what can be expressed, and to make great music from what can’t.

We get inspiration from the usual inspiring places - the world (and its inevitable parlous state), nature (the memories of which sustain us, the peril to which propels us to… devise feature-length performance pieces), past poets, future voices. And music - from Franz Schubert to Viv Stanshall, Trevor Watts to Tom Waits, June Carter to Cartola.

HOPE OF A TREE - part of Leeds Lit Fest 2020

Thursday 5th March, 7:30pm, £8

St John the Evangelist’s Church, 23 New Briggate, Leeds LS2 8JD.

HOPE OF A TREE is a brand new piece, consisting of original songs and text, to be premiered at Leeds Lit Fest this year. This piece is themed around the idea of trees, woods and forests, inspired by The Overstory, the Booker-nominated novel by Richard Powers.

Over Christmas 2019 Peter composed several new songs for this project and we’ve been working on them for two nearly months now - taking our musical cue from pieces we enjoy performing, such as READY CHAIR and DEAD IN THE COLD, this suite of songs and text is a bit more homogeneous than our usual eclectic fare. Jacqui has some new technology she’s been playing with and Richard has been playing a lot of Country music. We’re really looking forward to be playing in St. John the Evangelist’s, it promises to be a very special evening :)
